If you want to know if the Chevy Trax is a good subcompact SUV just ask the audience. Up until last year it was number 1 in its class and it’s still a close 2nd among 9 rivals. The tough looking little…

2016 Chevrolet Trax LT AWD Road Test Review

Most Canadians won't know this, but we were first to get the Chevy Trax. It arrived here in December of 2012 as a 2013 model, and immediately became the bestselling subcompact SUV in Canada with 7,013 units sold throughout the 2013 calendar year. Our friends to the south couldn't access it until December of 2014, two years later, after which it immediately jumped up to second place with 63,030 sales throughout calendar year 2015, only beaten by the bestselling Buick Encore.

Yes, it's impressive to think that General Motors, an automaker once associated with large as a barge American iron, isn't just outselling the imports and domestics alike in the fast-growing subcompact SUV segment, but downright slaughtering all competitors with last year's Trax and Encore sales combining for 130,579 units in the U.S. compared to just 60,946 for the next bestselling Jeep Renegade (even if you include seven months of new Fiat 500X sales, which shares the Renegades platform, the total only climbs Read Full Story

2016 Chevrolet Equinox LTZ AWD Road Test Review

Good news, Equinox fans. No, don't get too excited, you'll still have to wait about a year or so for a completely redesigned version, but Chevy has given the current model a nice mid-cycle makeover.

The design team didn't stray too far from the second-generation model that's sold very well for the bowtie brand. I liked the styling of the first-gen version too, all 12 years of Equinox sales adding up to 193,730 in Canada as of February, and 1,929,897 sold over the same period in the U.S. That's more than 2 million Equinoxes delivered in both markets, and oddly a near even per capita take-rate (the two markets normally differ with respect to brand and model popularity). Even factoring in that Canadian sales have been sliding in recent years the Equinox remains an unequivocal success, although I'm sure those inside the hallowed halls of GM's Oshawa, ON HQ, the many more working across the country in the General's umpteen independent dealerships and you, a potential Equinox buyer, Read Full Story

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab Short Box 4WD Road Test Review

GM hasn't tried to reinvent the pickup truck with its new Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon duo. And why should it? Along with its domestic competitors it helped to invent the concept way back at the dawn of the automotive age and has been integral to its development over the century that followed, including the 1948 "Advance Design" Pickup that was Chevy and GMC's first post-war effort, the 1967 model that were two of the first modern-era light trucks on the market, and specific to this Colorado review, Chevy's numerous compact entries including the original Chevy LUV that hit the scene in 1972, the S-10 (and GMC Sonoma) that arrived in 1982, and the first generation Colorado (and Canyon) that came along in 2004. After a brief two-year hiatus between 2012 and 2014 the Colorado remains Chevy's go-to compact truck, although it's now grown to mid-size dimensions and is certainly more appealing in every respect.

While I liked the styling of the old Colorado, the new one looks a lot Read Full Story

2015 Chevrolet Volt Road Test Review

With the all-new 2016 Volt upon us and very few 2015 models left, this review will serve as a farewell to the impressively innovative first-generation car that, at least to my eyes, has aged quite well, both from a design and driving perspective.

In fact, this outgoing model is even more uniquely penned than the incoming one, or at least it looks much different than the 2015 Cruze it shares much of its underpinnings with, whereas the new Volt and upcoming 2016 Cruze have had a stylistic coming together, especially when viewed from the front quarter.

The 2015 Volt's patterned metallic grille inserts offer a nice take on Chevy's usual bisected body-colour design, while attractively shaped headlamp clusters still look fresh after all these years, not to mention the hook-shaped DRL/fog combinations below these, which deliver some visual drama to the design. Continuing rearward, the thick black shadow line under the greenhouse remains a thoroughly unique element that no Read Full Story

2015 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 Crew Cab 4×4 Road Test Review

Like what you see? You've probably noticed the new Chevrolet Colorado driving by and while many will know exactly what it is and had possibly been waiting for its return, many more will wonder where it came from. No matter where you fit into this scenario or some other unmentioned one, know that having the Colorado back in our midst is a very good thing.

GM had all but given up on the compact to mid-size truck segment a few years ago, as did Ford with its once best-selling Ranger and Dodge (now Ram) with its Dakota, all watching their once significant market share erode against Toyota's all-conquering Tacoma, but truth be told it wasn't the market that wasn't working for the domestics, it was that none of them bothered to update their trucks often enough to warrant buyer interest, while Toyota kept making theirs newer and better. The Big 3 abandoned the small truck market to Toyota, Nissan and Honda long before they discontinued production of their respective models, and instead Read Full Story
