I know Manitoulin Island is known as the world’s largest island in a freshwater lake, but it should also be dubbed the Personalized Custom License Plate Capital of Ontario.

During the recent trip my wife, Jane, and I took to Manitoulin Island, which is about a two-hour drive north of Sudbury, I couldn’t help but notice there seemed to be a lot of personal plates. Maybe it’s because it’s a tourist spot that attracts so many people.

So, here are a collection of the plates I took photos of in Manitoulin, beginning with the one I found the most curious, PR BERT: Now, there’s a rule about using profanity or vulgarity when getting plates registered in Ontario, so I can only assume the owner may be a person named Bert who works in public relations or somehow the licensing people did not deem it to be questionable, offensive or in bad taste. If it somehow got through that stage and the owner is now enjoying a good laugh, well, there’s always a joker in every crowd.

SHP4SHUZ: Rather self-explanatory. I’m guessing it is a woman because I don’t know if a guy would put this on his plate. But you never know.

I LUV UJESSE :Reminded me of the song Jesse’s Girl. But is this Jesse a guy or a girl?

SHREDDN: Could mean anything, but I liked the line underneath it: This Grandpa Is Fantastic.

CAFELADY: Clearly this lady likes coffee. Quite likely she owns a coffee business.

KAGAWONG: It’s a town of 90 in Manitoulin. One of the residents is Mike Strobel, a longtime Toronto Sun columnist who is mostly retired and living there.

LGEND295: From what I’ve read, it refers to a hybrid all-terrain tire, BAJA LEGEND EXP. But why would anyone use that for a plate? Clearly this car doesn’t have these types of tires as best as I can see. Must be something cryptic.

LDAY75: I’m really baffled about this because of the word veteran. Does it have something to do with the military or does it pertain to a Labour Day sale for Lane 201, which had a buy one and get 75% discount on their products.

HIKERBLU: I just love the look of this vehicle  with the blue and black paint scheme. It’s also a neat looking compact crossover. I took it at the Inn On Gore Bay, where Jane and I stayed. Great place.
