Genesis reveals pricing and trim details for new 2022 GV70 compact SUV

Genesis is successfully growing its lineup with a fresh, new design language and some entirely new core models, the sharp looking 2022 GV70 just the latest to enter the fray. With an all-inclusive price of $49,000 including freight and delivery fees (or $49,150 all-in as shown on GV70’s retail website landing page), the new GV70 is not the least expensive nor the priciest in the burgeoning compact luxury SUV market segment, which is now some 16 competitors strong.

In fact, the new GV70 places ninth in the compact premium crossover affordability index, near the mid-point, although not all of its competitors include destination, delivery fees and the $100 A/C tax in their advertised prices. After factoring in the latter (and using an average of $2,500 for those brands that made it difficult to locate this information on their retail websites), the GV70’s pricing proved more competitive with a ranking of seventh most affordable.

On that note, the GV70’s lower priced alternatives include the $44,298 Cadillac XT5 (plus $2,500 in fees for a total of $46,798), $44,505 Acura RDX (plus $2,475 in fees for a total of $46,980), $44,600 Lexus NX (couldn’t locate their fees so adding $2,500 for $47,100), $45,495 Infiniti QX50 (plus $2,220 for $47,415), $45,200 Lincoln Corsair (plus $2,250 for $47,450), and $46,550 Audi Q5 (plus $2,395 for $48,945) (note that dealer administration fees and other costs weren’t always shown by some manufacturers, with all the Japanese brands being most difficult to source such information from).

Allowing eight brands to advertise lower pricing in such a highly competitive market is a bold move for Genesis, albeit possibly a calculated one, in that its mid-pack price placement could move potential perceptions of its brand identity and therefore equity away from becoming a value-packed alternative to more established rivals, like parent company Hyundai’s namesake brand was long seen amongst mainstream volume sector consumers. Instead, causing its clientele to pay for perceived quality means that Genesis might immediately be respected as a true challenger that’s capable of going head-to-head against Mercedes-Benz, BMW, Volvo, Lexus, Land Rover, and the like. The alternative is to join Cadillac and Acura, which are often forced to sell on price despite the quality of their offerings.

Speaking of the latter collection of competitors, the new GV70’s $49,150 window sticker is positioned just under the $48,500 Volvo XC60 after adding its fees (plus $2,615 for $51,115 in total), as well as Land Rover’s $49,900 Discovery Sport (plus $2,726 in fees for $52,626), as well as the identically priced $49,900 Mercedes-Benz GLC (not shown on retail site so adding $2,500 for $52,400), while the BMW X3 starts at $52,550 (plus $2,245 for $$54,795), the Tesla Model Y at $55,000 including its $1,300 freight fee, although the least expensive Performance model currently offered on their retail site goes for $69,990), the Alfa Romeo Stelvio at $55,190 (plus fees ranging from $1,995 to $2,695 for a maximum base price of $57,885), the Porsche Macan at $57,800 (plus $1,600 for $59,400), the Jaguar F-Pace at $60,350 (plus $2,826 for $63,126), and finally Land Rover’s Range Rover Velar at $63,500 (plus $2,826 for $66,326).

The $20k price gap from easiest on the wallet to arguably most revered and priced accordingly is a wide chasm for compact luxury SUV buyers to cross, but it should be noted that any one of the compact luxury utilities named gets close to the vaunted Velar’s starting point when loaded up with options, with even the cheapest on this list going well beyond. Additionally, some in this group feature more equipment in their various base trims than others, not to mention stronger performance, greater interior room, and the list goes on.

For just under $50k including fees, the new GV70 2.5T Select AWD comes standard with Quad LED headlamps, LED taillights, 18-inch alloy wheels, proximity keyless entry with pushbutton ignition and remote engine start, fingerprint authentication, an 8.0-inch LCD digital instrument cluster, a large 14.5-inch HD multimedia display featuring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, GPS navigation, wireless device charging, 12-way power-adjustable driver’s seat with powered lumbar, an eight-way powered front passenger seat, heatable front seats, rear occupant alert, a proximity-activated hands-free tailgate, and more.

In addition, the GV70’s standard Highway Driving Assist II driver assistance and safety technology suite includes High Beam Assist, Lane Follow Assist, Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, and Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist.

As is usually the case in this class, all-wheel drive is standard, the GV70 including Terrain Mode Select as well, while the powertrain consists of a 2.5-litre turbocharged inline four-cylinder with 300 horsepower and 311 lb-ft of torque at the lower end of the pricing spectrum, or a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 with 375 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque when a desire for power trumps one’s need for fuel-efficiency. Both engines are gasoline-powered, but keep in mind that Genesis recently launched an all-electric G80 mid-size luxury sedan, so an electric option may be on the not-too-distant horizon. As it is, an efficient eight-speed automatic transmission comes standard, complete with steering wheel-mounted shift paddles.

Standard colours include Uyuni White, Vik Black, Himalayan Gray, Savile Silver, Adriatic Blue, Cardiff Green, Barossa Burgundy, and Mauna Red, with the base interior only available in Obsidian Black with “artificial leather” upholstery (Genesis may want to consider a more appealing name for its leatherette).

For $55,500 including freight and fees, the 2022 GV70 2.5T Advanced AWD adds 19-inch alloys, power-folding side mirrors with puddle lamps, a powered tilt and telescopic steering column, genuine leather seat upholstery (in Obsidian Black, Vanilla Beige, Havana Brown/Ocean Wave, Pine Grove/Ocean Wave, and Slate Gray/Velvet Burgundy, depending on the exterior colour), a powered panoramic glass sunroof, ventilated front seats, heatable rear outboard seats, and a fully automatic rear climate control system, while $59,000 Advanced Plus trim antes up with a driver’s head-up display (HUD), a Surround View parking monitor, a Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM), an 18-speaker Lexicon premium audio upgrade, manual rear side sunshades, and a household-style 110-volt AC power outlet in the rear cargo area.

Moving up to the $63,000 GV70 2.5T Prestige AWD adds a Sport Appearance package with alloy foot pedals, special Nappa leather upholstery with suede inserts (in Obsidian Black, Sevilla Red or Ultramarine Blue, depending on exterior colours), a suede-like Microfibre headliner, a power-extendable driver’s seat lower cushion and powered side bolsters, Smart Posture Care, Parking Collision Avoidance-Assist Rear (PCA-R), and
Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA).

The $68,500 GV70 3.5T Sport AWD trim line combines previously-mentioned 2.5T Advanced AWD equipment with the larger, more potent engine, plus some of the just-noted Prestige items such as the Sport Appearance package, alloy pedals, HUD, power seat cushion extension, bolsters and Smart Posture Care, Lexicon sound system, and 115-volt power outlet, as well as 21-inch alloy wheels, unique aluminum sports trim, upgraded monobloc brakes, an upgraded Electronic Control Suspension with Road Preview, and Sport leather seating.

Lastly, GV70 3.5T Sport Plus AWD trim adds an electronic limited slip differential, a larger 12.3inch 3D TFT LCD digital instrument cluster, carbon fibre interior trim, softer Nappa leather upholstery with stitched quilting (in all the same colours as the Prestige and Sport), a Microfibre headliner, and laminated acoustic rear door glass, as well as the aforementioned surround parking monitor, BVM, PCA-R, RSPA, and rear sunshades for $75,500, which incidentally is a price point this segment’s most affordable Cadillac XT5 reaches when fully optioned, as do most others.

Clearly defining the GV70 from any other SUV in the class is Genesis’ new “Crest Grille” and “two-lined” fore and aft “Quad Lamps”, which will be brand-wide when the second-generation G70 sport-luxury sedan arrives alongside the GV70 SUV this summer. The two distinctive design characteristics are said to have been inspired by the brand’s signature winged emblem, while the GV70’s “Beauty of Openness” interior design theme isn’t so specific about its origins, but looks inviting just the same. Genesis claims it was inspired from Korean architecture, and provides “maximum comfort and convenience” plus a “driver-oriented” layout. The look is certainly unique, particularly the ovoid steering wheel hub and even more distinctively surfboard-shaped cluster of controls to the left and right of the driver, while everything appears very upscale.

Along with the premium finishings, alluring design, bevy of features and strong performance, plus (lest we forget) the inclusive delivery and destination fees, Genesis provides its owners with an especially pampering at-home/work valet pick-up and drop-off concierge service, complete with a complimentary courtesy vehicle, when complimentary scheduled maintenance or any other repair is required during the first five years of ownership, or the GV70’s first 100,000 kilometres of travel.

Additionally, GV70 buyers benefit from Genesis Connected Services with map updates and more for the extent of the SUV’s five-year comprehensive warranty (with an unlimited km extension for map updates and roadside service). The five-year or 100,000-km comprehensive warranty is an entire year longer, and an average of 20,000 km greater than most others’ comprehensive coverage in this class, plus two years or 40,000 km more than most rival powertrain warranties.

Despite the depth of competition in the compact luxury SUV segment, we expect Genesis to do well with its GV70, just like it has with the compact G70 sedan, the mid-size G80 sedan, and the recently launched GV80 mid-size SUV. Its flagship G90 luxury sedan is a slower seller, but an inability to sell large numbers of full-size four-doors is hardly an uncommon issue amongst premium players in Canada or most other markets, other than with Mercedes and its segment-dominant S-Class, and to a lesser extent BMW’s 7 Series. Flagship sedans are more about image, their existence in a given luxury brand’s lineup providing higher levels of overall credibility, but compact luxury SUVs are far more important to a brand’s bottom line, because they normally become instant bestsellers. The GV70 should be no different for Genesis.

To many sports fans, esports aren’t actually counted as sport. Certainly, esports require high levels of stamina and skill, not to mention finite concentration, coordination and a modicum of intelligence to reach the top echelons of a given game, which are all attributes of top-tier athletes, but as anyone who’s driven a car on a track knows, merely mastering a simulator doesn’t make for a competitive racer in the real world.

This said, every modern-day Formula One driver spends countless hours at the controls of their teams’ high-end simulators, virtually tackling every track on the calendar in order to hone their race craft and likewise prepare their team for what they may be facing ahead of an F1 weekend. The same can be said for most any professional car racing series, which makes esports particularly relevant in the motorsport community. In fact, F1 drivers and other series competitors have gone head-to-head in the digital arena, especially this year before cars took to the track, putting the e-drivers that took part in Porsche’s new Esports Sprint Challenge in rarified company.

Porsche doesn’t compete in F1, or for that matter in sports prototype racing series at tracks like Le Mans anymore, its 919 hybrid having taken the overall win at that renowned 24-hour event three years in a row from 2015 through 2017. Porsche also holds title to the winningest brand at the famed circuit, while special race prepped versions of its road cars are fielded by many teams in other FIA sports car categories and additional series, plus the performance brand is now heavily invested in Formula E, the FIA-sanctioned all-electric racing series. Now we can add esports to Porsche’s motorsport activities, thanks to the Porsche Esports Sprint Challenge Canada one-make virtual race series.

The Esports Sprint Challenge Canada series was launched in May, 2020, together with renowned online games company iRacing.com. iRacing, which is best known for its “Grand Prix Legends” and NASCAR 2003” games, created a game that pitted virtual 718 Cayman GT4 Clubsport cars against each other on popular race tracks, the final at the famed Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal.

While 30 contestants took part, the series was dominated by Brandon Hawkin from Lindsay, Ontario, who won every race.

“The series was organized very professionally and it was a pleasure to race with everyone – what a fantastic experience,” commented Hawkin. “It will be extremely memorable based on how competitive the series was with lots of track battles.”

William Levesque ended up second in the Esports Sprint Challenge Canada championship, with Giovanni Romano taking a respectable third place. Along with the pride of winning and the series trophy, Hawkin will join Porsche Canada at an actual race track for the Porsche Experience program, an opportunity of a lifetime for any sports car enthusiast.

“Driving a Porsche on track is something I’ve wanted to do since I was a child,” said series champion Brandon Hawkin.

Porsche provided alternative prizes for the 29 contestants that trailed Hawkin, while iRacing provided credits to take part in online games.

Nissan is giving its best-selling Rogue compact crossover SUV a complete redesign for 2021, and thus far it’s received very favourable reviews. We covered all the key details in an earlier story, but now Nissan has released pricing, standard features, trim specifics, and options information, so here’s what you need to know in order to compare it to upcoming 2021 versions of the Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Mazda CX-5 and other key rivals.

As is often the case with a redesign, many features that were previously optional with the 2020 Rogue are now standard for 2021, such as LED headlights that replace the old halogen lamps, 17-inch alloy wheels instead of identically-sized steel wheels with covers, a new heated and leather-wrapped steering wheel rim joining heatable front seats that were already standard, new standard steering wheel paddle-shifters for the continuously variable transmission (CVT) that’s once again the only transmission on offer, proximity-sensing Intelligent Key access, a six-way adjustable driver’s seat that now gets standard powered lumbar support, and much more for a new base price that’s a reasonable $1,000 higher than the outgoing 2020 model, at $28,498 plus freight and fees.

A redesigned set of LED taillights continues Nissan’s focus on safety, with some of the advanced driver assistive systems carried forward on all trims including Intelligent Emergency Braking, Intelligent Blind Spot Warning, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert, plus a host of new ones that were previously optional as part of the Nissan Safety Shield 360 suite of technologies, such as Pedestrian Detection being added to the Intelligent Emergency Braking system, Lane Departure Warning included as part of the side alert system, High Beam Assist making nighttime travel easier, and Rear Intelligent Emergency Braking improving safety when backing up.

The new Rogue also keeps last year’s standard Rear Door Alert system that upon arriving at a destination informs the driver if something or someone was placed in the rear seating area prior to leaving, while a new Intelligent Driver Alertness system also gets added to the base model. Lastly, the new Rogue includes 10 standard airbags.

Once again, tech features like NissanConnect with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard in the 2021 Rogue, as does a backup camera and SiriusXM satellite radio, but the centre touchscreen that all these features get displayed on grows from 7.0 to 8.0 inches diagonally in the base model, with the upgrade adding another inch for a larger, more premium interface. Nissan adds another powered USB port to the standard mix too, the new total being two, while the new base model also gets Siri Eyes Free, Bluetooth wireless phone connectivity with streaming audio, a hands-free text messaging assistant, pushbutton ignition, and more.

Along with the aforementioned CVT, the 2021 Rogue pushes forward with the same 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine making an identical 170 horsepower and 175 lb-ft or torque, plus if the base model is enhanced with Nissan’s Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system, a $2,300 upgrade to $30,798, it also boasts a drive mode selector with Terrain, Snow, Normal, Eco and Sport modes. With the Eco mode engaged, Nissan is claiming the AWD version will achieve an estimated fuel economy rating of 9.6 L/100km in the city, 7.5 on the highway and 8.7 combined, while the base FWD model is rated at 9.1 L/100km city, 7.1 highway and 8.2 combined.

Nissan is once again offering the Rogue in three trim lines, albeit mid-range SV trim can be had with an SV Premium Package. Before delving into options, however, for $31,998 with FWD or $34,298 with AWD, the regular Rogue SV builds on S trim with 18-inch alloy wheels, body-coloured door handles, roof rails, remote engine start, proximity-sensing keyless entry added to the rear doors, UV-reducing solar glass, an Intelligent AroundView Monitor, Intelligent Cruise Control, Intelligent Blind Spot intervention, Intelligent Lane Intervention, ProPilot Assist semi-self-driving technology, an eight-way powered driver seat, two additional stereo speakers for a total of six, a powered panoramic glass sunroof, two rear USB ports, a Wi-Fi Hotspot, and a security system. If you want more you can opt for the just-noted SV Premium Package that, while only available with the AWD model, adds Prima-Tex leatherette-appointed seats, rear door sunshades, heatable rear outboard seats, and a powered rear liftgate.

Most of the above items come standard in the $39,998 Rogue Platinum, except the 18-inch rims are upgraded to 19s, the dual-zone automatic climate control is expanded to a tri-zone system, the powered driver’s seat features memory, the leatherette upholstery has been swapped out for particularly rich looking quilted semi- aniline leather, the powered liftgate now includes motion activation, the centre touchscreen grows to 9.0 inches and includes Nissan’s “Door-to-Door” navigation system, ProPilot Assist includes Navi-link, and the audio system comes from Bose and gains four more speakers for a total of 10.

The Rogue Platinum also includes LED fog lamps, front parking sensors, an auto-dimming centre mirror, tilt-reversing side mirrors, an advanced 12.3-inch “Digital Dashboard” gauge cluster, a 10.8-inch head-up display, Traffic Sign Recognition, a wireless charging pad, a four-way powered passenger seat, a remote folding rear seat, interior ambient lighting, a driver seat-mounted front-centre supplemental airbag, and a redesigned Divide-n-Hide system in the cargo compartment.

Infiniti had more reasons to celebrate than just Canada Day on July 1, 2018, because extremely strong June sales resulted in the best month it has ever recorded. 

The Japanese luxury brand increased nationwide deliveries to 1,398 units last month, which represents a 16.3-percent year-over-year increase as well as an all-time monthly sales record. 

As you might expect, sport utility vehicles were key to its success, with the brand’s largest QX80 growing its sales by 13.7 percent in June.

Additionally, Infiniti’s most popular QX60 mid-size luxury crossover achieved 567 sales, this resulting in a new monthly record as well as 14.5 percent growth when compared to June 2017. 

June was also a big month for the QX50 compact luxury crossover, which arrived as a completely redesigned 2019 model halfway through the month and therefore benefited from 335 Canadian deliveries for its best June ever, not to mention 119 percent year-over-year growth.

Even the discontinued QX70 crossover found traction in June, its sales rising by 19.1 percent, while the ever-popular Q50 sport-luxury sedan also received a bump in popularity, finding 2.3 percent more buyers than it did a year ago. 

The Q50 helped keep Infiniti’s car sales from sliding farther backward than the -2.5 percent slip they experienced in June, whereas SUV sales grew by a substantive 23.3 percent. 

That said Infiniti cars are the big winners so far this year, with 2018 year-to-date deliveries at the close of Q2 resulting in +9.2 percent compared to -8.5 for SUVs.

Subaru Canada, Inc. (SCI) capped off calendar year 2017 with its best December on record, helping the Japanese automaker to achieve its sixth consecutive year of annual sales growth.

December 2017’s total was 3,876 units for a 4.6-percent gain over the same month in 2016, pushing Subaru’s total annual deliveries to 54,570 vehicles for an 8.7-percent year-over-year sales increase when compared to 2016’s 50,190-unit tally.

Movers and shakers included the Impreza compact four-door sedan and five-door hatchback, plus the Crosstrek subcompact crossover SUV that achieved 38.6 and 48.0 December growth respectively. The Impreza’s yearly sales were even more impressive, with growth of 42.4 percent to 10,617 units overall in 2017, while the Crosstrek found 14.9 percent more buyers for a total of 11,168 deliveries last year.

Additionally, the WRX and WRX STI performance models collectively increased from 4,217 to 4,616 units for a respectable 9.5-percent gain in 2017, while the mid-size Outback crossover’s year-over-year growth was more modest, from 11,255 to 11,490 units for a 2.1-percent upward trend. Despite its smaller numbers, BRZ sports coupe growth was a solid 6.3 percent from 740 units in 2016 to 787 last year, although it should be noted that the BRZ’s 2016 sales represented a significant drop when compared to much stronger sales in years prior.

Ironically in a market that predominantly favours utilities, Subaru’s best-selling Forester compact SUV was one of the only models to slip backward due to sales of 13,441 units in 2017 compared to 13,798 in 2016, this being a 2.6-percent slide, the other model losing ground year-over-year being the Legacy mid-size sedan that dropped from 3,001 units in 2016 to 2,451 deliveries last year, representing an 18.3-percent downturn.

On the positive, the 2018 Legacy has received a refresh that should boost interest, while the Forester will receive a dramatic redesign later this year. Available even sooner, the all-new 2019 Ascent mid-size crossover SUV, which just made its Canadian debut at the Montreal auto show, will arrive this summer. The Ascent is Subaru’s largest-ever crossover SUV with the choice of seven- or eight-occupant seating, expanding the Japanese brand’s market reach to a much broader market than ever before. This should help Subaru continue its sales growth momentum.

Did you attend last night’s Killers concert in Vancouver or the Jimmy Eat World show in Toronto? Planning on taking it to the limit one more time with The Eagles this spring or singing “Stay With Me” at the top of your lungs at the Sam Smith show in the fall? Chances are you won’t only be enjoying your favourite songs while taking in some great live shows, but you’ll see Mercedes’ three-pointed star branding on site as well.

Mercedes-Benz Canada inked a deal with Live Nation Canada earlier this year, which now gives the automaker excellent exposure at fun, uplifting events that are ideal for positive brand association.

Along with other key branding at venues, an animation of colourful dancing concertgoers will appear on digital screens at key points throughout the event (see video below), culminating with an emotive “Be Moved” message.

“This partnership with Live Nation is about celebrating our passion for performance,” said Virginie Aubert, Vice President of Marketing at Mercedes-Benz Canada. “Be Moved” plays on both the literal and figurative meaning of the word, making a bold statement about the Mercedes-Benz brand, while also extending an invitation for concert-goers to embrace, enjoy and be inspired by the live music experience.”

The Live Nation Canada deal allows Mercedes to connect with music fans of all ages, from teens, which will soon be learning to drive, potentially with the brand’s innovative Mercedes-Benz Driving Academy, attending Katy Perry’s upcoming concert tour, young adults at the same event that might choose to get there and go home using the automaker’s forward-thinking Car2go ride sharing program, to parents who may consider one of Mercedes-Benz’ wide array of cars and SUVs for their next new vehicle, while the slightly more mature Foo Fighters faithful may need something larger like Mercedes’ GLC, GLE or GLS sport utility for their growing families.

The Live Nation Canada partnership extends for multiple years, “striking a chord with Canadians by celebrating the power of music and live performance,” said the automaker in a press release.

Along with sponsorship, Mercedes introduced an exclusive concierge service for its current customers (including Pre-Owned, Vans and Smart cars) dubbed Mercedes-Benz Star Access, which personally assists with ticket purchases between 11am and 7pm ET (8am and 4pm PT) by calling 844-389-STAR or emailing [email protected].

What’s more, a separate program called Mercedes-Benz Star Access VIP is designed to “create unique experiences for their customers at Live Nation Canada events across the country.” The program reserves blocks of premium concert tickets for its customers, which will be especially helpful at events that only offer general admission tickets otherwise.
