If you think that the new Ford Fusion is only enjoying phenomenal sales success because it's great looking, a closer look is needed. Its nod to the beautiful Aston Martin Rapide guaranteed it would be one of the most attractive cars in the mid-size class when it arrived in blue-oval dealerships last year, but what new car buyers couldn't see behind the sheet metal was an upscale interior filled with top-level features, strong performance from a variety of fuel-efficient powertrains, and overall versatility.

No other manufacturer offers as many powertrain options with a single model as Ford does with the 2014 Fusion. Following up on the debut of the newly redesigned 2015 Focus Hatchback in Geneva earlier this year, Ford will bring its similarly reworked Focus Sedan to the New York International Auto Show next week.

Like its five-door sibling, the 2015 Focus Sedan gets a bold new front fascia that bears a strong resemblance to the bigger Fusion and more than a passing glance at an Aston Martin. In addition to the new fascia it also gets a new hood and new headlights with LED accents. At the back there's a new trunk lid and taillights.

Inside, the refreshed sedan gets what Ford promises is "a more intuitive and upscale interior," with new seat trims, a revamped centre console, improved Sync connectivity system, standard MyKey across the range, standard backup camera, and an available heated steering wheel, available blind spot information system and available lane-keeping system.

The idea behind Ford's global "One Ford" strategy is to reduce costs and maximize development returns by eliminating regional products, instead selling global vehicles across multiple markets. So when the company introduced its new Everest Concept at the Bangkok International Auto Show it quickly set tongues wagging that this might be the new Explorer.

Ford's own media statements only reinforced the notion: "The Everest Concept represents our vision of a global Ford vehicle with regional heritage that will allow customers to take on the world," the maker said. "(It is a) bold new direction that we envision for a midsize, seven-seat SUV."

The Everest Concept has already been cleared for production outside North America, and will be built in Thailand for sale in Asia and Australia as a 2016 model, replacing the existing Everest (also known as the Endeavour in India). You'd think after spending time in a new Fiesta ST that the regular Fiesta would seem a bit on the boring side, but not so. Certainly the ST is a rare and wonderful whirlwind of fresh air to drive, but as far as subcompact hatchbacks go the little Fiesta SE I recently tested out is impressive on all counts.

For 2014, Ford currently offers the Fiesta with two engines and three transmissions, the ST getting a 197-horsepower 1.6-litre turbocharged, direct-injection EcoBoost four connecting through to a six-speed manual, and all other models getting Ford's 120 horsepower DOHC, 16-valve, Ti-VCT 1.6-litre four-cylinder with 112 lb-ft of torque driving the front wheels via a five-speed manual or a sophisticated six-speed PowerShift dual-clutch automatic. Getting a jump on the upcoming International Geneva Motor Show, Ford chose the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona to reveal its updated 2015 Focus compact. The current third-generation Focus was introduced in 2010 for the 2011 model year, and the revisions for 2015 represent a mid-cycle refresh.

The changes include a restyling that Ford says "reflects the One Ford global design language." In practice this means the Focus gets a new front fascia with the same Aston Martin inspired trapezoidal grille as the Fusion and Fiesta, as well as slimmer front headlights and more rectangular fog lights. The hood has also been restyled to offer a more sculpted look, while at the back the trunk lid and rear light clusters have been revised.
