Volvo asks us to “rediscover your passion in life” in a new V90 Cross Country

The new 2017 Volvo V90 Cross Country is upon us, replacing the extremely well proven XC70 with beautiful new sheetmetal, stylish LEDs, a more refined leather-lined interior, state-of-the-art electronics, and a technologically advanced powertrain. With styling that could singlehandedly make wagons cool again, it rolls on the same undercarriage as the multi-award-winning XC90 SUV and S90 mid-size sedan models, and is powered by the same turbocharged and supercharged direct-injection 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine used in top-level trims throughout Volvo's lineup, except for the XC90 SUV that boasts a 400 horsepower plug-in hybrid version of the same power unit in its highest trim level.

In an attempt to draw attention to this all-new model, Volvo has come up with a creative ad campaign designed to lure oftentimes shut-in workers out of doors in order to "rediscover your passion in life".

"You reach a point in life when you have to choose," says Thomas Andersson, Vice President Read Full Story

Volvo Car Canada reports 27.5 percent growth for 2016

To say Volvo has been on a roll would be an understatement, the Swedish brand’s new XC90 mid-size crossover SUV and S90 mid-size luxury sedan rejuvenating interest in the brand’s entire lineup. Volvo Canada sold 6,103 units in calendar year 2016, which showed a 27.5-percent increase over the 4,788 deliveries experienced in 2015. December resulted in 433 units down the road compared to 340 total sales for the same month the year prior, this strong result marking the fifteenth consecutive month of sales growth in Canada. “2016 was truly an exceptional year for Volvo Canada. Exciting new product, the introduction of advanced technologies and a motivated retailer network led to the Volvo Car brand exceeding expectations in Canada,” said Alexander Lvovich, Managing Director, Volvo Car Canada Ltd. “With three new models being unveiled in 2017, the brand is poised for another year of growth as the Volvo Car brand continues to make its impact on the premium car segment in Canada.”

2017 Volvo V60 Cross Country T5 Drive-E AWD Premier Road Test Review

Volvo's Cross Country line is mostly unique in the industry. Certainly the Swedish company is not alone when it comes to producing crossover utilities, but unlike Volvo most premium-branded competitors duke it out in the regular SUV classes against the XC60 compact and XC90 mid-size models. Volvo takes things a step further by offering raised and bulked up versions of its V60 and upcoming V90 wagons in an effort to fill the niche between car and SUV, the V60 Cross Country and soon to arrive V90 Cross Country truest to the original crossover concept.

The idea isn't new. The first Cross Country rode on the mid-size V70 P2 (second-generation) platform way back in 1999. Volvo wasn't the only player in this market either, Audi first offering a taller version of its A6 Avant wagon dubbed Allroad the same year, and later bringing the compact A4 Allroad to market in 2009, which effectively replaced the regular A4 wagon in our market. Now in the last year of its 1st generation, the 2017 XC60 drops its 5- and 6-cylinder for a single turbo 2.0L four making 240-hp in T5 trim and 302-hp when hooked up to a supercharger for the T6. An 8-speed…

2017 Volvo XC60 T5 Drive-E AWD Special Edition Road Test Review

With an entirely new 2018 XC60 waiting in the wings one would expect this 2017 model to be purely carryover, how most automakers deal with final years of a given generation, but the compact luxury SUV is much too important for Volvo, so therefore changes have been made. Still, it's more about what isn't available this year than what is.

Gone are the old inline five- and six-cylinder powerplants, the latter an engine we saw disappear from the fabulously successful second-generation XC90 SUV and stylish new mid-size S90 when these models went on sale in late 2014 for the former and mid-2016 for the latter. Offering three completely different powertrains in any relatively low volume vehicle (the XC60 has once again been Volvo's second-bestselling model over the first 11 months of 2016 but it only accounted for 1,430 sales compared to the competitive Audi Q5's and Acura RDX' 7,677 and 7,446 sales respectively) doesn't make a lot of sense from a business perspective anyway, so slimming Read Full Story
