2011 Mercedes-Benz R-Class Gets Extreme Makeover

The current R-Class was never touted as a particularly pretty crossover, unlike the ML or, in its slightly more rugged way, the larger GL,

but as far as interior roominess goes it's one heck of a practical family hauler.  The 2011 model, however, will retain the functionality of the first generation R with the added bonus of attractive styling. 

New is a deep, wide grille that's much more masculine than the current car's, while it's nose is taller, more upright and less homely, with a bolder more assertive appearance that is bound to attract those who want an SUV for the rugged go-anywhere appearance but would rather live with the user friendliness and lower ride height of a car.

the general shape of the car's structure appears the same as the current model from the A-pillar rearward, although rear taillights and a revised rear bumper give it a fresher look. 

The cabin looks much the same as the outgoing model, stating that this is more of a mid-cycle upgrade than a wholesale model revision, although the current R's interior is superb so no prospective buyers should be put off. 

Likely the new R-Class will come in R350 BlueTEC diesel and R350 4Matic gasoline versions in North America, and different variations in other world markets.  A return to the R63 AMG is also possible now that the crossover looks more aggressive right out of the box.
