Used dealer cost as basis for discussions and total price. No interest how they write it up. Worked well.

In advance, I prepared several scenarios (best, worst case) based on the wholesale costs and selected $400 worth of additional accessories. I took my laptop and knew my numbers well which helped in my negotiations. When I showed my Car Cost report and indicated I was using wholesale figures in my pricing scenarios, it changed the conversation. The dealer got a 5-6% profit which was reasonable for a high demand vehicle and I received extra accessories over and above what I asked for.

Buying a 2012 Subaru Legacy, and saving $1000 off of MSRP.
There are only 3 Subaru dealerships in my area. I never presented the Wholesale Price Report to my sales rep. However, at the first dealership, I started negotiations at cost, and worked up to 3% over invoice. After an hour of negotiations and mentioning the dealer incentive highlighted on the CarCost.com price report, the sales rep denied the existence of any factory to dealer incentive and let us walk away without getting lower than their 6% over cost offer. The second dealer we visited went as low as the first, but didn't budge after offering minor accessory incentives. We eventually took the car at 6% over cost with a trunk cargo tray (Retail $150) and trunk cargo nets (Retail $150?!). They offered us "Free" snow tires valued at $1000 if we paid an inflated MSRP of $1000 above the MSRP listed on Subaru Canada's website. Free tires, they say? In the end, we opted out of the snow tires and got a similar deal compared to the first dealership we visited. We decided to buy given that we suspected the third and final dealership would offer us a similar price.
