BMW Surpasses 1,000,000 Mark with X5 SAV

When BMW introduced its X5 just before the turn of the century, many faithful roundel fans were shocked and some even dismayed

that their sport sedan (and sport wagon) company would put out an SUV. BMW, already owner and purveyor of Land Rover, called the X5 an SAV, however, distinguishing it from off-road capable 4x4s before the word crossover had been formally coined, and then when it ran rings around its own 5 Series Touring all naysayers seemed to just shrug their shoulders and accept it as a true BMW.

Eleven years plus another generation later and BMW has sold over a million X5 SAVs, while ex-CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder's crowning glory, Land Rover, is long gone after two failed marriages. The X5 is now larger and even seats seven, but still maintains superlative road manners and top-tier quality.

2012 BMW 1 Series M Coupe unleashed in Detroit

If you love cars there's a good chance your heart beats heavily for BMW's M lineup, especially the Teutonic brand's M3, the car

that brought M-power to the masses. The M3 has grown in size and power since the original turbocharged four-cylinder version hit the streets, so it will be good news to lightweight pocket rocket fans that the Munich-based outfit has finally anted up with a back-to-basics M model.

Well, the 1 Series M Coupe isn't exactly back-to-basics, being almost as sophisticated as the current M3 less two cylinders. And to those who are wondering why it's not dubbed M1, a brief tour of BMW M heritage will bring you up to speed on the M that started it all, a mid-engine supercar of the same name. Amongst BMW's faithful roundel fan club, calling the new coupe an M1 would be near sacrilege.

2011 BMW 550i Sedan Road Test Review

Grace. Elegance. Performance. Three adjectives I find synonymous with the 2011 BMW 550i sedan. Introduced as an all-new

model in 2010, the new 5 Series' road presence not only demands respect but also exudes excellence; qualities that have been eminent from the German auto manufacturer since day one.

Without an unflattering angle, the trim and toned sixth generation 5 Series sedan turns heads and breeds envy from its rivals. The combination of a long hood, short overhangs and coupe-like roofline work symbiotically to create an exterior that is graceful and elegant. Furthermore, with the signature kidney grille inclined slightly forward and visually stimulating curves, I much prefer this generation of 5 Series in comparison to the last.

It also appeared as though I was not the only fan of the new 5 Series' styling. I had parked the sedan in my friend's underground parking stall only to return to see a piece of paper on the windshield. Confused as to why <Read More>

2011 BMW M3 Sedan Road Test Review

The M3 was first offered in 1986 as a homologation special allowing BMW's entry into the German Touring Car Championship.

Its popularity and steadily increasing sales for each iteration motivated the German automaker to continue developing this unique combination of driving dynamics, comfort and luxury in a compact machine, offering a new version each time the underlying 3 Series was reborn. North America first saw the M3 sports sedan concept in 1988.
That first M3 produced 192 hp from a 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine during its 1988-1991 model year run. A small run of 45 282-horsepower Euro-spec 1994 M3s made it into Canada and despite a hefty (for the time) $59,900 sticker price, sold out in only three days. A more widely available version, also sold in the U.S. arrived in 1995 with a 3.0-litre (and later, 3.2-litre) 240-hp inline-six powerplant.  In 1997, the first M3 Sedan joined the BMW family and the <Read More>

   All-New 2011 BMW X3 Revealed

Few BMW models received as much negative attention as the X3 when it was launched. Following up the popular X5 was a tough

order to begin with, but BMW's design department might have been a little too "creative" with its styling and the result was a design few loved, while interior quality was often criticized by media pundits that expected more.

For 2011, BMW will give us a lot more. The all-new X3 is much more conservatively penned, but more so it's longer, wider and taller than its predecessor. This last bit of information should come as no surprise, as the second-generation X5 increased its dimensions when it debuted and a new X1 is expected to slot in under the X3 becoming the German brand's new entry-level crossover.

How much larger is the new X3 over the outgoing model? It's 1.2 cm (0.5 inches) taller, 2.8 cm (1.1 inches) wider and 8.3 cm (3.3 inches) longer, which translates into a <Read More>

2011 BMW 335i Coupe Road Test Review

Not too many years ago, the idea of owning a BMW had become something of a joke. Yuppies had taken to "Beemers" in a big way,

transforming the brand into just another fad, like Tommy Hilfiger clothes or certain brands of vodka or cologne. If this year it was "in," next year for sure it would be "out" as the status seeking crowd moved on to the Next Big Thing.

BMW, to their credit, didn't let the Yupsters have undue influence on the course of the car company. The folks in Munich kept turning out better automobiles with appeal that went far beyond the famous blue-and-white "Roundel" emblem on the hood and the prestige that accompanies it.

BMWs perennially make nearly all the "Top Ten" lists of most desirable cars. They do it, not by bribery or extortion, but by constantly improving and refining their products. If it's not actually

M3 Celebrates 25 Years of Production

If you've never had the pleasure of piloting an M3 through a twisting, undulating roadway, you've been missing out on one of life's

greater pleasures. Now an auto enthusiast icon, the BMW is celebrating 25 years of production.

The sportiest version of BMW's already sporty compact model, previously only available as a two-door Coupe and Convertible, the 1986 M3 sported a peaky 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine good for close to 200-hp, plus a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and unique final drive. It featured some 5 Series parts swapping for the suspension and brakes too, as well as a totally upgraded and stiffer body structure with totally new aero enhancements and new panels such as a deep front air dam, a massive rear wing, and "box flared" wheel-arches to integrate a wider track and meatier wheel and tire package; only the hood and sunroof were shared with the standard E30 3 Series. The look was radical, and the car is now a collectors' item.

Sports Activity Vehicle, and a classic Gran Turismo. The new 550i BMW Gran Turismo displays a uniquely stylish and elegant package in the form of a four-seater that comes with a coupé-like body style, featuring a stretched and sleek roofline along with an innovative two-piece tailgate. The spacious interior provides luxurious comfort with a slightly elevated seating position for convenient ingress and egress, in addition to good visibility, except perhaps directly out the rear glass, where vision is somewhat limited.

Visually, the BMW 5GT delivers proportions that are typical of BMW design. Up front, the view is characterized by the strong presence of the low-slung trademark BMW twin kidney grille, the large air intakes and the characteristic dual round headlights. The BMW grille itself is slanted slightly forward, with its upper edge establishing the foremost point on the body. The dual round <Read More>
