   BMW Surpasses 1,000,000 Mark with X5 SAV


When BMW introduced its X5 just before the turn of the century, many faithful roundel fans were shocked and some even dismayed

that their sport sedan (and sport wagon) company would put out an SUV. BMW, already owner and purveyor of Land Rover, called the X5 an SAV, however, distinguishing it from off-road capable 4x4s before the word crossover had been formally coined, and then when it ran rings around its own 5 Series Touring all naysayers seemed to just shrug their shoulders and accept it as a true BMW.

Eleven years plus another generation later and BMW has sold over a million X5 SAVs, while ex-CEO Bernd Pischetsrieder's crowning glory, Land Rover, is long gone after two failed marriages. The X5 is now larger and even seats seven, but still maintains superlative road manners and top-tier quality.

Well, the 1 Series M Coupe isn't exactly back-to-basics, being almost as sophisticated as the current M3 less two cylinders. model in 2010, the new 5 Series' road presence not only demands respect but also exudes excellence; qualities that have been eminent from the German auto manufacturer since day one.


Without an unflattering angle, the trim and toned sixth generation 5 Series sedan turns heads and breeds envy from its rivals. The combination of a long hood, short overhangs and coupe-like roofline work symbiotically to create an exterior that is graceful and elegant. Furthermore, with the signature kidney grille inclined slightly forward and visually stimulating curves, I much prefer this generation of 5 Series in comparison to the last.

Its popularity and steadily increasing sales for each iteration motivated the German automaker to continue developing this unique combination of driving dynamics, comfort and luxury in a compact machine, offering a new version each time the underlying 3 Series was reborn. North America first saw the M3 sports sedan concept in 1988.
 
That first M3 produced 192 hp from a 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine during its 1988-1991 model year run. A small run of 45 282-horsepower Euro-spec 1994 M3s made it into Canada and despite a hefty (for the time) $59,900 sticker price, sold out in only three days. transforming the brand into just another fad, like Tommy Hilfiger clothes or certain brands of vodka or cologne. If this year it was "in," next year for sure it would be "out" as the status seeking crowd moved on to the Next Big Thing.

BMW, to their credit, didn't let the Yupsters have undue influence on the course of the car company. The folks in Munich kept turning out better automobiles with appeal that went far beyond the famous blue-and-white "Roundel" emblem on the hood and the prestige that accompanies it.

The sportiest version of BMW's already sporty compact model, previously only available as a two-door Coupe and Convertible, the 1986 M3 sported a peaky 2.3-litre four-cylinder engine good for close to 200-hp, plus a Getrag five-speed manual gearbox and unique final drive. It featured some 5 Series parts swapping for the suspension and brakes too, as well as a totally upgraded and stiffer body structure with totally new aero enhancements and new panels such as a deep front air dam, a massive rear wing, and "box flared" wheel-arches to integrate a wider track and meatier wheel and tire package; only the hood and sunroof were shared with the standard E30 3 Series.
